One thing I love to do around here is to give a little behind-the-scenes look into what makes Mama’s Happy…well, Mama’s Happy! If you didn’t know already, there’s a
small army team of mighty women (and a few men) that keep all our stores running smoothly. Initially, I wanted to follow each Mama around for a day and take a zillion photos and share it all with you. But I think for now, a little game of 20-ish questions will have to do….just wait ladies, me and my camera are ready to travel!
Let’s start with your name: Shawn Marie Lubben
How long have you been with Mama’s Happy? 2 years this September
How did you get involved with Mama’s Happy? My dear friend and fellow Mama, Ann Hayes, convinced me to send in an application to be a guest vendor. I am so grateful to have been invited to stay and to get to know the amazing women who make up Mama’s Happy. It really is a sisterhood. The support and understanding these women offer me is invaluable. I love them.
What do you do at Mama’s Happy? I am a vendor/ Mama at the Independence Occasional Shop and I also have inventory in the gift shop area at the new Stillwater location. I’m also the Independence Store Manager and event coordinator for Mama’s Happy.
What does your workspace at home look like right now? It’s a mess of course. I have a few different workspaces but this is my favorite as it looks out into the backyard and the lighting is great. What is your favorite holiday? Christmas! It is by far the busiest season for people in our business and can be exhausting, but I find it so rewarding. I love everything about it!
What is your favorite Annie Sloan Chalk Paint color? I love the vibrant colors, so I would say that Florence is my favorite. Alone it’s great, but it can be mixed to create many different variations of blues and greens.
If you had a super power, what would it be? Speed. Somedays I feel like I don’t accomplish everything I need to.
What project are you in the middle of? I am finishing a vintage vanity with mirror and I am always working on signs, (Because this really is my Happy Place!)
If you were given an all-expense paid trip to anywhere in the US, where would you go? I would love to visit all of the memorials and museums in Washington DC.
What repurposed or vintage item can you not get enough of at the moment? Vintage scales and crates of all kinds. I am always attracted to beautiful old white pitchers but I rarely keep them for myself.
What is one thing you cannot go without? Sometimes I think that I cannot go without coffee in the morning. I really, really like coffee.
Have you brushed shoulders with anyone famous? If so, who? I have had a few close encounters with famous people. I once met Stephen Baldwin and Dr. Fink (He was part of Prince and the Revolution) but the coolest encounter was Ben Stiller. He was filming “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” in NYC and my sister and I stumbled upon the set. (That’s Kristin Wiig from Bridesmaids walking with him.) It was awesome!!
What was your best junk find? This piece was discarded on the curb in a nearby town. It is huge and just barely fit in the back of my car. I am so glad it did as it turned out beautifully and now lives on a lake somewhere up north. 😉
Besides Mama’s Happy, where do you shop most often? If I am not shopping Mama’s Happy I am shopping at local thrift stores and of course Target.
What is your favorite lunch or dinner spot? D’Vinci’s in Watertown. The house dressing makes me swoon! Delicious!!
What are you really excited about or looking forward to right now? I am really excited to see where Amanda is going to take Mama’s Happy next! There really isn’t a dull moment around here and I wouldn’t have it any other way!!
What song has been in your head lately? So many songs! My ringtone is “Happy” by Pharrell Williams and it seems to be the repeat song I end up hearing in my head.
What do you do in your free time when you aren’t working on stuff for Mama’s Happy? As most of the Mama’s would tell you, if I am not working on stuff for Mama’s I am thinking about Mama’s. I do love to spend time with my family at the lake. I am hoping to do that a lot more this summer.
Thanks for playing along, Shawn! And for those of you who know Shawn, you know that she’ll always greet you with a smile. Be sure to say hi to her if you see her in one of the stores. While she’s most often found at Independence, she gets around to all of them, especially at events!
