As the phrase goes, “When mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” No one understands her more than a woman juggling all the roles that we chicks so often do. Mom, wife, friend, daughter, sister, employee, community volunteer, den mother/soccer mom/birthday party planner extraordinaire. Add to that list domestic goddess, fiscal magician and chauffeur of the family minivan, and you have just about covered it. You name it, she’s done it.
Mama’s Happy is for her, or more aptly you, if she sounds familiar. Chock full of beautifully displayed handcrafted, upcycled, repurposed and altogether fabulous home goods and gifts created by an eclectic group of bargainistas and artists who, like our shopping guests, want a little happy. A little something beautiful for the wall, corner or wardrobe that delights and satisfies.
Mama’s Happy got started in 2010 operating as an Occasional Shop in Mound, MN. A short 18 months after opening the call came in that the building we were renting was to be torn down. On the hunt for a new home for our new business, we came across the Historic Lyndale Creamery. A brick building dating back to 1894, it had all the potential to be the perfect spot for our little shop. However, the building was not available to rent, it was only listed for sale. After some serious number crunching and divine intervention, we took the leap of faith to purchase the property. Not only would it become the new home for Mama’s Happy, it would become the new home for my family as well. We moved the store in immediately and spent the next year renovating the upper level to accommodate our family of five. We still live there today.
In 2012 we discovered Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan. It was a game changer for our business. What used to be a grueling process of stripping, sanding or priming all of the furniture we set out to re-design, quickly became something we actually enjoyed from start to finish. It wasn’t long until we decided to become retailers of our new favorite product. Little did we know what this paint line would do for our business! As women around the area began hearing about the paint, they were led right to our doors to learn more about it.
In 2013 we made the decision to expand Mama’s Happy to the urban markets of Minneapolis & St. Paul. These stores are open 7 days a week. In 2017 the property next door to the creamery, the former butter-maker’s house (for real) came up for sale and we thought, “what a perfect spot for a weekend rental for women to get away from the distractions of life and recharge!” (I sold my husband on the idea by the fact that it has a garage with a sweet workshop in the back, 2 things our home at the creamery was lacking.) We furnished and decorated the entire home with merchandise from our stores, so it’s essentially like living in one of our stores, (which people are always telling us they want to do, but that would be a little creepy)
So we invite you to visit one of our four locations across the Twin Cities for the opportunity to get your creative juices flowing, the chance to roam our shop with a hot cup of coffee for ideas and inspiration, and the chance to interact with other Happy Mamas like yourself. Or perhaps take a class together or spend a weekend together!
You’re sure to love our unique, one-of-a-kind gifts and items for you and your home. It’s like walking through a magazine filled with ideas you can reproduce. Oh, but who are we kidding, really? You’ll never find the time. So pick out your favorites & take them home…a little happy just for you.
